Nigerian women have a long and powerful history of organizing against social injustice, from the 1929 Aba Women’s Riot against colonial oppression to the 2018 Yaba Market March protesting sexual harassment.
The heroines of these movements are honored here: depicted in red is Madam Ikonna Enyia, an organizer of the Aba Women’s Riot, and beside her stands Damilola Marcus, founder of the Market March.
Both women represent decades of activism against a wide range of social issues in a country that continues to treat women as second-class citizens.
